Having recently reread
The Lord of the Rings, I thought I would also pick up
The Hobbit again. It narrates the story of how Bilbo set off on his own set of adventures, a generation before Frodo and the tale told in LOTR, and how he obtained the ring of power deep in a cave in the Misty Mountains. The tale is lighthearted, but shows Tolkien's trademark depth and imagination, with fascinating characters, interweaving histories, and compelling prose. While I don't think it rivals LOTR, it certainly stands on its own as a wonderful book, and I look forward to reading it to my kids in a few years.
